Jan Kotík patří k žijícím klasikům českého výtvarného umění. Od tvorby v duchu Skupiny 42, přes gestickou abstrakci, experimentální práce šedesátých let až po konceptuální tvorbu v německém exilu po roce 1970 byla jeho tvorba vždy aktuální součástí českého a posléze i evropského umění. Jako jeden z mála českých umělců se dokázal prosadit i v mezinárodním kontextu. Katalog s množstvím barevných i černobílých reprodukcí doprovázel jeho velkou výstavu v Národní galerii v r. 1996, která z jeho rozsáhlé tvorby představila především práce na papíru. Uměleckohistorické statě Jiřího Valocha a Jiřího Machalického jsou doplněny úryvky z textů samotného autora a rozsáhlými soupisy.

Jan Kotík is one of the living classics of Czech art. Beginning the production following the spirit of the Group 42, through the gestic abstraction, experimental works of the sixties, and including the conceptual works in the German exile after 1970, his work has always been an actual part of Czech and also European art. He is one of the few Czech artists who have managed to assert themselves in the international context.A catalogue with a number of both colour and black and white reproductions accompanied his big exhibition in the National Gallery in 1996 which presentented especially the works on paper from his extensive production. The art- historical articles by Jiří Valoch and Jiří Machalický are complemented by extracts by the author himself and extensive indexes.

Jan Kotík zählt zu den lebenden Klassikern der tschechischen bildenden Kunst. Seine Schöpfung stellte immer einen aktuellen Teil der tschechischen und europäischen Kunst dar, seit seiner mit der Gruppe 42 verbundenen Periode über die gestische Abstraktion und die Experimente in den 60. Jahren bis zu den Werken, die er nach dem Jahre 1970 im Exil schuf. Er gehört zu den wenigen tschechischen Künstlern, die sich auch in der Weltkonkurrenz durchsetzten. Der Katalog mit vielen schwarzweißen und Farbreproduktionen begleitete seine große Ausstellung in der Nationalgalerie im Jahre 1996, die vor allem auf seine Arbeiten auf dem Papier spezialisiert war. Die kunsthistorischen Texte von Jiří Valoch und Jičí Machalický werden von Zitaten des Künstlers und von umfassenden Verzeichnissen begleitet.
